Q: I hear people saying “God told me to do this” or “If God calls me to go here” and I noticed you said it. So my question is, how do you know if God is “calling” you to do something? Like, the Bible isn’t going to directly say, and God doesn’t come down and tell you. I’ve always wondered what people meant by that and why I haven’t been told by God what to do.
My Answer:
Okay, well I know this might just be a wording thing, but God doesn’t “come down”… God is with us always, which is one of his promises to us. Having said that, I look at many things in life symbolically and just ask God for discernment and for Him to lead me in my life… Sometimes it’s a feeling, like conviction, or sometimes it’s something vague… Most of the time, I pray a lot about things and I just know what God wants me to do through some random thing. I can’t really explain it well, because I’m sure it’s different for everyone. I guess it’s kinda like “listening to your heart”, but more reliable.
It’s not that God hasn’t called you to do anything, it’s probably that you didn’t notice him calling you and you did it anyway. Most of the time people attribute answered prayers to things other than God or something. Like, for me, even a little anticipation for a mission trip is God calling me to do that. I believe that God is active in our lives and we just have to have a little focus and discernment…
